- Gorpcore: Where Fashion Meets Function
Gorpcore, a fashion trend that emerged in the mid-2010s, has taken the world by storm. It's a style that embraces the aesthetics of outdoor gear, transforming practical clothing into high-fashion statements. Origins of Gorpcore The term "gorpcore" was coined by Jason Chen in 2017 in The Cut, referring to the "good old raisins and peanuts" trail mix or granola bar often carried by hikers – hence, "gorp". The term 'core' is used here in the context of layering statement brand outerwear over basics like cargo pants and plain t-shirts - essentially often common items in a wardrobe. David & Sons GORP Bar has been a favourite snack of hikers for decades. As a clothing style, Gorpcore draws inspiration from the world of hiking, climbing, and camping, incorporating elements like: Technical fabrics: Gore-Tex, fleece, and other high-performance materials designed for durability and weather resistance. Functional features: Pockets galore, adjustable straps, and reinforced seams for maximum utility. Bold colors: Vibrant hues like orange, yellow, and teal often dominate, making a statement in any setting. Jason Chen, Editorial director, Wirecutter. Formerly of New York Magazine’s Strategist, Departures, Details, and GQ. Versatility and Comfort One of the key appeals of gorpcore is its versatility. While rooted in outdoor activities, these pieces seamlessly transition into everyday wear. Think puffer jackets paired with jeans, hiking boots with dresses, and fleece vests layered over sweaters. Gorpcore also prioritizes comfort. Garments are often designed with a relaxed fit, allowing for ease of movement and breathability. This focus on comfort makes gorpcore a practical choice for navigating the demands of modern life. Layering is Key Layering is a cornerstone of gorpcore. Combining different textures and weights creates depth and visual interest. A base layer of a technical t-shirt can be topped with a fleece jacket, followed by a waterproof shell. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for you. Statement Pieces Gorpcore is all about making a statement. Key pieces include: Puffer jackets: A classic gorpcore staple, puffer jackets provide warmth and style. Hiking boots or Trail inspired Sneakers: Chunky, rugged boots add a touch of ruggedness to any outfit while Sneakers reflect a crossover influence of Streetwear. Fleece jackets: Versatile and comfortable, fleece jackets are a must-have for any gorpcore enthusiast. Cargo pants: Practical and stylish, cargo pants offer ample storage space for your essentials. Backpacks: A functional and fashionable way to carry your gear. Accessories Complete your gorpcore look with the right accessories: Beanies and hats: Keep your head warm and add a touch of personality. Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the sun in style. Watches and compasses: Functional and fashionable accessories that add a touch of adventure. Top Gorpcore Brands The North Face: Known for their iconic jackets and durable gear, The North Face is a go-to for gorpcore enthusiasts. - Re-commerce: The Rise of Sustainable Fashion
The fashion industry has long been a major contributor to environmental pollution. From the harmful chemicals used in textile production to the mountains of discarded clothing ending up in landfills, the need for a more sustainable approach has never been more urgent. Enter Re-commerce, a burgeoning industry that is revolutionizing the way we consume fashion. The Re-commerce Boom: Re-commerce, which encompasses the buying and selling of used goods, is experiencing explosive growth. Driven by a growing awareness of environmental issues, a desire for unique and affordable fashion, and a shift in consumer values, the market for secondhand clothing and accessories is booming. Market Growth: Reports indicate that the global secondhand apparel market is projected to grow significantly in the coming years, outpacing the growth of the overall apparel market. High-Fashion Embrace: The re-commerce movement has even captured the attention of the high-fashion world. In 2024, renowned organizations like Oxfam and eBay made a significant statement by showcasing pre-loved and reimagined garments at London Fashion Week. This move has signaled a growing acceptance of secondhand fashion within the industry and a recognition of its potential to drive innovation and sustainability. "Used" as Inspiration: High-fashion designers are increasingly referencing "used" clothing in their collections. Techniques like distressing, patching, and reworking vintage garments are being embraced as a source of inspiration and a means of creating unique and sustainable pieces that are more attainable to everyone. Beyond Resale: Mending and Reimagining Re-commerce extends beyond simply buying and selling used items. There's a growing movement towards: Mending: Repairing and extending the lifespan of existing clothing is becoming increasingly popular. Reworking and Customizing: Giving new life to thrifted garments through alterations, embellishments, and creative interventions is gaining traction. This not only reduces waste but also allows for personalized and unique expressions of style. The Benefits of Re-commerce: Environmental Impact: By choosing to buy secondhand, consumers can significantly reduce their environmental footprint. Re-commerce helps to divert clothing from landfills, minimizing the environmental impact of textile waste. Sustainability: Re-commerce offers a more ethical and sustainable alternative to fast fashion. It promotes a circular economy where clothing is reused and repurposed, reducing the need for constant new production. Health Considerations: While advancements in textile technology have improved performance fabrics, concerns remain about the potential long-term health impacts of prolonged contact with synthetic materials, particularly during exercise. Many synthetic fabrics are made from plastics, and sweating can lead to the release of microplastics. In contrast, natural fibers like cotton, denim, leather, and silk offer a more breathable and potentially healthier alternative. Quality Over Quantity It's important to remember that quality often surpasses quantity. Compare a cheaply made fast-fashion hoodie to a vintage Champion reverse weave hoodie, and you'll immediately notice the difference in construction and durability. Vintage garments, often crafted with higher quality, natural materials like 100% Cotton and superior craftsmanship, can last for decades with proper care. Conclusion: Re-commerce is more than just a trend; it represents a fundamental shift in how we consume fashion. By embracing secondhand options, mending our clothes, and reimagining their use, we can create a more sustainable and ethical fashion future. This is also the age of the individual, so enjoy expressing your style anyway you want, be an individual, create unique stuff that other people are jealous of, celebrate that golden ratio 1:1 and just be you! - Rating the Top 3 EPL Third Kits for the 2024/25 Season
Third kits offer clubs the opportunity to experiment with unique designs and color palettes. This season there was a lot of strong contenders for the Third Kit top 3, but these three truly stand out from the pack. 1. Newcastle United FC: Newcastle's third jersey is not only my choice for the #1 EPL Third Kit for the 2024-2025 Season, it is also my vote for the #1 EPL Kit overall. The shirt offers a pure white base which is offset with green and black accents, creating a visually dynamic and eye-catching look. With the stunning retro David Ginola era Newcastle Away Kit ranking in the Top 3 EPL Away Kits, this colour scheme seems like a definite nod to another icon of the 1990’s in the Adidas Equipment or EQT range that was dynamic competition to Nike’s Nike Sportswear, Nike Team Sports and also their ACG imprint. The clever NUFC logo on the chest that looks very contemporary was, news to me, actually first used by the club between 1983-1988. It fits well with this design which encompases retro and modern design inluences. A final flourish is a club mascot Magpie embroidered on the back of the neck. All of which make this an iconic design and surely a future classic for many years to come. 2. Everton FC Everton's third jersey this season is a stylish and sophisticated affair. The Taupe base which references archival Baseball jerseys, a sport that shares a rich history with the Toffees. Castore, the clubs kit manufacturer, has designed and absolute classic, a kit that provides a timeless retro look. Subtle charcoal accents with contrasting yellow pin-stripe accentuates the design which is both elegant and understated, showcasing a refined vintage aesthetic. These word resonate from the club’s official site: Step onto the pitch in unbeatable Everton fashion with this season's official Third Kit from Castore, drawing inspiration from Major League Baseball's historic associations with the club. The shirt's design is inspired by the 100th anniversary of the exhibition match between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants held at Goodison Park and incorporates classic baseball colours in the design. The comfortable fit is just at home as everyday wear as when you step out on the pitch for your own game while the ever-present Everton crest on the chest shows your Blues pride every time you step out for a game. 3. Manchester United FC: Manchester United's third jersey this season pulls in a colour scheme that’s very familiar to its fans. The off-white base is accented with vibrant red and contrasting black, creating a striking and memorable look. Like Newcastle Away and Everton Third (above) this kit has a retro feel with its broad bands of colour boldly across the chest adorned with a rather menacing and a re-worked MUFC ‘Red Devil’ badge, which here is ironically, not red, it’s black. This simple but eye-catching design is both modern and retro, reflecting the club's rich heritage. This is just one perspective, of course! The beauty of football kits lies in their subjectivity. - Rating the Top 3 EPL Away Jerseys 2024/25 Season
The Premier League isn't just about the home games; the away kits often showcase a different side of a club's identity, with bold colours and unique designs. This season, a few kits truly stood out from the crowd: 1. AFC Bournemouth I'm a big fan of Umbro as a brand so Bournemouth's away jersey this season is a big hit for me and a striking departure from any previous designs. On a hot streak of Away jerseys that started in 2022 the white base is adorned with a print likely derived via some abstraction of the Umbro logo, which seems to echo through the series of v's or ticks that appear repetitively within the pattern. White shorts and socks with colour-themed bands finish this kit as a simple but strikingly assemblage with an almost edgy, modern design. 2. Newcastle United FC: I have a soft spot for Newcastle because I think they're a really hard-working and dynamic football team right now, and also because I really rate their captain Bruno Guimarães and foward Alexander Isak are two of the best players in the EPL, if not the world right now. But anyway, back to the kit, Newcastle's Retro Away kit this season has been well received by fans and nuetrals that recognize it from the Keegan era, where icons like David Ginola and Allan Shearer pulled on the Toon Army livery. A stylish and sophisticated affair that incorporates a dark navy blue and burgundy red - and like a fine burgundy, Adidas have given us a taste of a vintage classic, referencing the clubs first use of this now iconic colour combination during the 1995-1996 season. Matching, plain blue shorts and contrast colour socks complete this stylish kit and places it amongst one of their best. As the NUFC site so eloquently states regarding the approach to this design: Relive the glory of Newcastle United's iconic 95/96 season with the Newcastle United adidas 24/25 Authentic Away Shirt. The shirt worn by our players is more than just a nod to the past; it's a symbol of our relentless pursuit of greatness. Echoing the navy and burgundy colours that nearly secured us the title, this shirt embodies the renowned spirit and passion of Tyneside. https://shop.newcastleunited.com/products/newcastle-united-mens-24-25-away-authentic-shirt#:~:text=Relive%20the%20glory,passion%20of%20Tyneside . 3. Tottenham Hotspur FC Spurs Away kit this season is the best of a plethora of sky-blue kits and claims the bronze medal position for this simple yet stylish kit. The muted sky blue hues are a refreshing change from the more common away kit colours and designs, and the intricate fabric pattern adds a touch of personality. The kit is both eye-catching and memorable, making it a standout choice. The lad below is 23 year old dutchman Micky van de Ven, who for me is the difference between Spurs success and failure this season, he's a really versatile player who's expectionally strong and quick for his size. He adds some aggression to their back line and his dynamic burst from defense can often result in blistering counter attacking opportnunities. A real talent and a player I'd like to see at LFC to replace Virgil whenever he decides it's time to leave. Faster than your average dutchman. Micky van de Ven. Footnote: When I think of Spurs I always think of my old friend Tom Smithies (or Tommy Cockles to his friends). Our Tommy had a bright passion for the sport, the club, life...and he's left that spark in his family. We lost Tommy in 2020 and strangely, it's brought me a little closer to one of his favourite hobbies, following Spurs. Since we got the Fubo subscription, I try to watch as many Spurs games as I can as his proxy here on this tragically weird yet spectacularly wonderful, third planet from the sun, called 'Earth'. This was a tough category with slim picking in this season's Away kit options, so there are no honourable mentions here, so step up designers! This is just one perspective, of course! The beauty of football kits lies in their subjectivity. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with this ranking? Share your favorite Premier League home jerseys in the comments below! - Rating Our Top 3 EPL Home Jerseys 2024/25 Season
The English Premier League is renowned not only for its thrilling on-field action but also for the vibrant and stylish kits that grace the pitches each season. This year, the competition for the best home jersey was fierce, but three clubs truly stood out from the pack: 1. Chelsea FC Chelsea's improved form has surprised everyone this season and their star studded team is certainly looking good on the pitch. Their home jersey for the 2024/25 season is an instant classic, not just for the simple yet unique design, but also for the fact that it has no sponsor, somehow elevating it above all other teams offerings for that reason alone. The iconic blue hue is a staple for the club, and this year's design incorporates a subtle yet elegant pattern that adds a touch of sophistication. The clean lines and minimalist approach ensure the focus remains on the players and their performance. 2. Liverpool FC I have to be honest and say that up until this year, Nike's offerings for LFC since they took over production in 2020-2021 season, have been lacklustre, pedestrian, boring even. This years offering for Liverpool's home jersey is a bold design statement that draws elements from the club's rich history and passionate fanbase. Geometric pin-stripe patterns offset the classic liverpool red base, with yellow accents used for the Nike logo, LFC badge and striking triangular flashes under the arms and on the shorts. The collar, remains the talking point, dividing opinion a BMW grille, but ironically (especially since this is Nike's last year as kit manufacturer for LFC) this collar directly references a popular and iconic collar design that Adidas used between 1991-1995 , although what divides opinion is the choice to cut the V of the collar off so high. Personally, I'm pleased to learn that Adidas is taking over from Nike supplying LFC kits from 2025-2026 Season onwards and hope they don't disappoint and come up with another iconic design for a club they share such a rich history with, but until then, this season's home and third kits at least deliver something more interesting than 3. Ipswich Town FC Ipswich Town's home jersey this season is a classic take on their traditional colours. Reminiscent of the stunning yet simple 2020-2021 BHAFC Home kit, this blue with white pinstriped shirt is an instant classic. Throw in some stylish sponsorship/branding in the form of promoting shareholder and lifetime fan Ed Shearans's new '+-=/x' Tour, tonally matching shorts and socks and the overall design is an instant classic. The design is both modern and unique, reflecting the club's ambitious and forward-thinking approach. Honorable Mentions: Arsenal FC: It's rare that Arsenal do not feature in the Top 3 kits. As a Liverpool fan I've often looked on enviously at Arsenal's kits, but this year with the exception of their blue Third kit which was a contender for this years Top 3 EPL Third Kits for the 2024-2025 Season, their Home and Away kits suffer point deductions for the design of the shorts, introduced and omnipresent on the international stage International during this summers 2024 Euro Finals, The African Cup of Nations and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, they've been an eye-sore ever since, but the home jersey itself is always a winner, especially with long sleeves, which is always a preference for me personally. Brighton & Hove Albion FC: The stunning yet simple BHAFC 2020-2021 Home kit for the Seagulls remains my favourite since Nike took over from Errea in 2014, but this years classic blue and white striped iteration incorporates a really sharp faded pin-stripe detail that offers a fresh design element from previous seasons. Of course, this is just one perspective of many. Often the beauty and appeal in design lies in its subjectivity. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with this ranking?
