Sustainability

Pieces of Jake operates in what is called the Re-commerce Fashion industry. Re-commerce is a rapidly growing industry across the globe and is playing a vital role in the sustainable fashion movement by extending the lifecycle of clothing and reducing waste. By encouraging the buying and selling of pre-owned garments, the re-commerce industry also reduces the demand for new production, which often has a significant environmental impact.

This practice not only promotes a circular economy but also allows consumers to express their style in an eclectic, yet more environmentally conscious way.

There is also an argument that the quality of many vintage garments is far better than some of what is being mass-produced today, and the condition of many of these 30-50 year old garments is testament to that end.  Ultimately, re-commerce fosters a shift towards mindful consumption, making fashion more sustainable for future generations to come.

Garment Refurbishing

A little de-bobble, goes a long way.

One of our favourite measures of sustainability and one that always ensures that your garment is super comfy and arrives in tip-top condition.

We are of course talking about de-bobbling and how this simple and often theraputic process of garment refurbishment, significantly reduces the amount of harmful microfibres entering the water system, through modern machine laundry techniques.

We think every home should have one of these, and are selling this rechargeable model in our store.

Ecological Cleaning

At Pieces of Jake, we are committed to minimizing the use of harsh chemical cleaners that contain endocrine disruptors, that are both a pollutant to the environment, but also our health.

Liquid laundry detergents, not only contain a number of chemicals and pollutants, but they also contribute to air and water pollution when disposed of incorrectly.

Our ecological choice is Tru Earth Laundry Detergent Eco-Strips, which are hypoallergenic, Paraben-free and Phosphate-free. We're so pleased with the switch, laundry looks and feels cleaner, the Fresh Linen scent is not overpowering and we no longer have to deal with heavy, bulky and hard-to-recycle plastic jugs!

Textile Recycling

When purchasing items for our store, often we are looking specifically for items that need mending, reworking or can be deconstructed, and made into something new.

One of the ways in which we like to ensure every scrap of fabric can be given new life is making mending patches which will soon be available for purchase in our store.

Recycled Packaging

One of the ways in which we can all contribute to sustainability is by using recycled packaging.

Whilst it is impossible to say we will never have to purchase packaging required for shipping your goods to you, as much as possible we use recycled cardboard, clean plastic bags and wrap, bubble mailers, envelopes and whatever else we can recycle that suits the purpose.

We encourage our customers to follow the practise of recycling packaging, thus reducing the need and expense of newly manufactured products, that have a significant manufacturing process.

Bio-degradable Disposables

We are literally looking at every process we undertake, and looking at ways to ensure that we are not contributing to landfill.

Luckily for us, we now live in a day and age where things like non-toxic, 100% degradable in 90 days disposable gloves are a thing, so of course, that's what we are using when undertaking garment and shoe cleaning, and dip-dying our custom one-of-a-kind pieces, like this stunning Coca Cola Jacket.

These gloves are also Food Safe.
